How to use the NWOpen-API

NWO wants to contribute to openness and transparency of funded research. The NWOpen API gives knowledge institutions, researchers, policymakers and developers access to information about NWO-funded research projects and their outputs. The API can be used to search and analyse this information and link it to other datasets.

What does the API offer?

The NWOpen API contains detailed information about the projects funded by NWO since 2016. The data emanates from NWO application system ISAAC and is updated every 24 hours. Through this API, NWO adheres to the principles of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information.

Available data

The NWOpen API contains the same data for all funded projects as the NWO project database. This concerns the following basic information:

  • Project titles, summaries and progress reports
  • Researchers and their institutions
  • The total grant amound and and project duration
  • Grant schemes and disciplines
  • Publications and other output, if available

Please note: the API only contains information about funded projects. Applications that did not receive funding are excluded for privacy reasons. Project leaders may request that their project information will not be shared publicly.

Documentation

Documentation for using the NWOpen-API contains explanation of terms and definitions in the project database, options for applying filters and queries when using the API, and examples.

See NWOpen-API documentation

A Swagger page has also been set up to provide an overview of the options facilitated by the API.
